If you were a child in the early 1990’s, the chances are you either owned or played a Sega Mega Drive.

For me, some of my favourite video games and memories were from this era and I have not had as much fun playing a video game since… until now.
Now a fairly old ‘game’ itself, being released on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 some time ago, the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is still one of my favourite discs.
Jam-packed with some of the most well-known and loved games from the Sega Mega Drive era, this collection has such a variety and large number of games – too many to list.
Among the most popular (and co-incidentally, my favourite) games include Sonic 1, 2 and 3, Comix Zone and Ecco the Dolphin. The collection also lets you unlock a selection of Sega Master System games which include Golden Axe Warrior and Phantasy Star, which were the two titles that introduced me to gaming. A nice bonus!
The visual quality of all the games available in this collection is amazing, not only do they look and sound better than the originals, but there is also the added improvement of all the games being available in HD if you connect your console to a HDTV. Whilst I had concerns that this might make some of the graphics too grainy, the opposite was true.
Although this collection is called The Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection, there are some games that have been noticeably omitted that I feel should have replaced a few of the games on here. Where was James Pond? Where was Earthworm Jim?
This collection also contains a ton of extras, some better than others. Firstly, there is an option called ‘Museum’ which gives you a little bit of the history of the game and some of the games artwork. If you are interested in how the game was developed, there is a feature which lets you watch interviews with the developers. Personally I am not really interested in the development side of games and feel that they could have replaced the interviews with another game or two.
Other than the notable omission of some games I think this collection needs to be perfect; the only other negative is that there is no online play. I know that these games were released before the ability to play games online ever existed but it would have been nice to have the option to play the cooperative games online with friends.
The Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection will bring back a lot of memories for older gamers – but at the same time, younger gamers out there will get a kick out of the tougher, more reflex-dependant games that are as challenging now as they were in the ’90s.
We will have to wait and see if a similar release is lined up for Xbox One and PS4, but in the meantime, pick up this gem while you still can.
