Esports is something that has been around for quite a long time but has only began to gain mainstream popularity just recently.
As you know it involves video games being played competitively, some say it’s a sort of sport, with people able to win individual or team accolades, titles and the like. It’s not just a concept for young people either, people of all ages are getting involved in esports, especially when it involves their favourite games. There are numerous console and PC titles out there that are now being played competitively by people all over the world.
There has always been a competitive edge to gaming, especially games where you could face off against other people, but esports is different. It allows people to see where they are on the grand scale. They can find out how they compare to their friends but also to the rest of the people playing the game around the world. Esports really does allow the best to compete against the best in order to win titles and be known as the finest player or team in the world.
One of the reasons esports became big is through streaming. This is where players can stream games live for other people to watch as they play. All of the top esports games find themselves being streamed on a regular basis with the likes of League of Legends, Counter-Strike and FIFA being extremely popular on streaming platforms such as Twitch.
The majority of the top esports players are streamers or YouTubers or even both. This is because for many esports is their job and they can maximise their income through streaming regularly or by uploading videos. Many esports championships are streamed live too.
A recent example of someone winning an esports title is Spencer Ealing, also known as Gorilla. He won the 2017 FIFA Interactive World Cup in London, scooping a huge $200,000 for his victory in the process. FIFA is rapidly becoming huge in the esports world, with various official competitions being held worldwide over the course of the year by FIFA Ultimate Team developers EA Sports.
Another huge esports game as mentioned above is Counter-Strike. The current title being played competitively is Counter Striker: Global Offensive and this sees teams compete in professional leagues against each other. These contests are also regularly streamed around the world on various platforms. Esports really is huge business and it’s fast becoming mainstream too.
With the competitions being regulated, it has encouraged some bookmakers to take a keen interest too. Unibet for example, is currently running markets on the Counter Strike: Global Offensive ESL Pro League games that are taking place. It’s a sign of things to come as esports will continue to grow and it will soon be popular in the betting world.
So far it seems only Counter Strike and League of Legends are the esports games that have open betting markets but it won’t be long before we see the likes of FIFA and others become that big that they can’t be ignored.
